Artist Statement
In my art, I begin in the unknown. Although I am trained in architectural planning, I allow myself to make mistakes in the liberating process of not sketching out your drawing. Although some may say, “this is inefficient, amateur, time-consuming”, or “a dumb way of doing things”, I enjoy the process of wasting time. In this way, rather than painting, I am sculpting a form from the paper, discovering the meaning of a piece as a coincidence under the layers of corrections and adjustments: acrylic, paint-marker, ink, and blood if I accidentally cut my finger. Sometimes my drawings tell me to be less hard on myself, to enjoy the details of my garden more often, or to call my mom. There are days in our fragmented lives that we don’t allow our brains to daydream or to brace the silence. In a deeply personal process, my art tells me what I need to hear. When our gaze, our time, and even our sleep is commodified under capitalism, moments of silence and self-indulgence are rare. By being the most inefficient I can be, by “wasting” time, I ensure my happiness. In the works displayed you will find explorations on place, gender, and pleasure. Most important, you will find the love child of lines, colors, and accidents.
